Teaching More by Telling Less: Tips for Teaching Digital Natives

The Lecture Well Series: Teaching More by Telling Less: Tips for Teaching Digital Natives with Dr. Janice Killian.

Wednesday, April 11th, 12:00-1:00 p.m., TLPDC room 153.

We’re professors. We profess. But professing may not always be the most effective way to facilitate student learning and ultimately student change. This presentation will explore possible contrasts between professors (labeled “digital aliens” or “digital immigrants” by Marc Prensky) and students (primarily “digital natives”), particularly in the differing ways we acquire and process information. This session is not specifically about technology, but rather how students respond to video vs. text, collaboration vs. individual assignments, and creative vs. structured projects. I will explore my own always-under-construction path to engage students in class process and decision-making while still emphasizing high standards. On this path, the professor becomes more facilitator than lecturer, yet retains control via content choice and assignment design. These techniques appear to encourage more engaged students, decreased surface learning, and more professorial energized teaching.
