Mexico elected a new president, Felipe Calderón, in 2006. In an effort to curb the drug trade and end years of government complicity, Calderón embarked on an aggressive military campaign against the drug cartels. He dispatched federal forces to Ciudad Juárez in 2007 in what became the largest front in Mexico’s own war on drugs. Dr. Cecilia Ballí has spent much of the last decade conducting research in the region and has explored the profound human implications of this policy shift. Now, as Mexicans prepare to elect President Calderón’s successor and residents on both sides of the border grapple in their own way with the ongoing violence, Dr. Ballí will assess the local impact of this complex conflict. This presentation is open to the Texas Tech and greater Lubbock community.
