Summer I Graduate Course in American Economic History

Dr. Barbara Hahn will offer a graduate seminar in American Economic History during the first summer session (HIST 5325-101, CRN 33941). Readings include Atack & Passel’s textbook introduction to American economic history, Eliot Brownlee on “Federal Taxation in America,” Tom McGraw’s “Prophets of Regulation,” and Michael Lewis’ “The Big Short.”

The roots of the recent financial crisis will form one unit, and students will also read in their own field of interest: the gold standard, why business distrusts government, or the historical impact of quality uncertainty and asymmetric information, are all possible subjects for an individually-designed fourth-week project.  The final exam will be a take-home paper based on this project.
