Ranch Day Set for April 28 at the NRHC
Spend some time in the Old West during the National Ranching Heritage Center’s 42nd annual Ranch Day, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., April 28.
Planned around the theme of “Head ’em Up, Move ’em Out,” visitors will learn about different methods of movement around the West. Not only will they learn about different transportation methods, they will also learn about the cattle drive. Highlights this year include horse-drawn carriage rides, horseback rides in the Slaughter round pen, riding the rail car at the Santa Fe Depot and food samples from the original multi-purpose vehicle, the chuck wagon.
The National Ranching Heritage Center is located at 3121 Fourth Street, east of Indiana Avenue in Lubbock.
Designed for the entire family, Ranch Day activities include washing clothes on a washboard, games from bygone times, carding wool and viewing cattle in the shipping pens by the train and depot. Pioneer crafts will be demonstrated, along with horse gentling and leatherworking. Performances and demonstrations will take place throughout the day on the stage of the 6666 Barn.
According to Ranch Day coordinator Emily Arellano, children can write with quill and ink at the Old Mail Camp, make their own rope in the McLaughlin Arbor, churn butter at the JA Milk & Meat House, learn to rope a steer and participate in stick horse rodeos.
Ranch Day is a living history, educational event begun in 1970 at the National Ranching Heritage Center. More than 100 Ranch Hosts and special event participants recreate authentic settings reflective of ranching from the 1780s to the present.
Admission to the day’s events is free but donations are encouraged. Lunch from Steak Express will be available for $6 in the Pitchfork Pavilion and homemade ice cream and vanilla wafers from the Slaton Bakery will be available for $3 on the Campbell Patio.
