This course examines the history of immigration in the United States from the perspective of foreign immigration/migration as well as within-country migration and the education provided to immigrant students throughout history. The focus will be on historical immigration from Europe, Asia, Mexico, and other Latin American countries with the primary focus and emphasis being on immigration from Mexico and Latin America. This course will also examine the current status of immigrant students in elementary and secondary schools in the United States and concentrate on the challenges faced by these new students as well as the issues faced by their families, teachers, administrators, and school systems. The class will also highlight the issues that impact immigrant children and their education at all levels in the United States. Readings and discussion will cover such topics as:
1. The History of Immigration to the United States
2. Eugenics & Immigration in the United States
3. Transnationalism
4. Assimilation
5. The Multiple Worlds of Immigrant Students
6. The Lives of Immigrant and U.S. Born Youths
7. Teacher-Student Relations and the Politics of Caring
8. Different Immigrant Group Experiences
9. Inter-group Education for Immigrants
10. The Education of Immigrant Students
Within these broad topics the class will specifically examine issues of:
1. Segregated schools/programs,
2. Legal issues of immigration and basic equality,
3. Language and identity,
4. Schooling, Poverty, and Migrant status,
5. Financial resources at the local, state, and federal levels,
6. Myths and facts about immigration and immigrants,
7. Stereotypes and negative views and feelings towards immigrants,
8. Demographics, Assimilation and Acculturation,
9. Health issues among immigrant students,
10. Media characterizations of immigrant students and their families,
11. Immigrant student needs beyond school, and,
12. Strategies used by immigrant students and families to adjust to American
society.
