The Guadalupe Mountains are one of the most unique natural resources in the Southwest. This beautiful high desert region provides numerous exciting recreational opportunities. On this trip, you will find yourself being challenged to tackle rugged limestone slopes as we descend over one thousand feet into one of the numerous canyon systems. There will be some places where a rope will be required to rappel and many times where we will encounter steep rocky terrain, stream crossings, and may have to wade through pools of spring water. Once at the bottom you’ll be looking up at amazing limestone bluffs and outcroppings. Now, turning into another canyon, we’ll make our way up winding streambeds and steep slopes that will require some scrambling. If you’ve been hiking or backpacking and are looking to challenge yourself both physically and mentally, then join us for an unforgettable trip.

Trip Specifics
Location: Guadalupe Mountains, New Mexico
Activity: Canyoneering
Learning Goals: Rappel technique, canyon navigation and route finding, desert travel concerns, minimum impact hiking and camping techniques
Prior Experience: none required, but should be comfortable with heights and rugged terrain
Physical/Mental Challenge: Physically, this trip is tough because of the long day of hiking and the 1,000ft elevation loss and gain. The terrain is demanding and requires a person to be physically fit and capable of carrying a 30lbs pack for about 10 hours straight. The hardest part of the hike is at the end of the day as we have to go back up the 1000ft that we came down. You will be exhausted, but glad for it.
