New for Fall 2012: IE 5331 Advanced Data Modeling
IE 5331: Advanced Data Modeling

Professor: Susan D. Urban

Schedule: MW 10:00-11:20 AM ENGCTR 110

This course is open to engineering and computer science graduate students and can serve as an elective in the interdisciplinary MSSE program.

Objectives: The purpose of this course is to address conceptual and logical data modeling and integration. The course will begin with a review of relational data modeling and query language concepts. Object-oriented conceptual data modeling will then be addressed through the Enhanced Entity Relationship Model and the Unified Modeling Language conceptual class diagrams, with a focus on mapping conceptual designs to structured data models such as the relational, object-oriented, and object-relational data models. Coverage will include the XML semi-structured data model, XML query languages, and the relationship between XML and traditional database systems. The challenges of data integration for modeling and querying data from multiple data sources and types will also be addressed.
