HDFS 5380 (Relationship Development) is a graduate course offered for the Summer 2014 Intersession (Maymester). In this course, I will focus on the processes and phases of relationship development (e.g., attraction, initiation, maintenance, dissolution, reconciliation). Although these phases might be commonly associated with romance in young adulthood, the phases are not actually this limited. Thus, I will address how the processes/phases are enacted in different relationship types (e.g., peers, friends, romantic partners, enemies) and age groups (e.g., toddler/preschool children, preteen children/tweens, adolescents, young adults, middle-aged adults, older adults). I hope that this approach will foster discussion about the variety of ways in which relationship development occurs.
HDFS 5380 is scheduled to be a three-credit Maymester course. Thus, the class is scheduled to meet for approximately four hours (6:00pm-9:50pm) on each weekday between 14.May and 29.May.2014. There will be no class meetings scheduled for the weekend days. The final exam will be conducted on 2.June.2014. So, it would be possible for a student to complete the entire Maymester (including the final exam) before the other Summer session classes begin (on 3.June.2014).
In reference to the class meeting format, I recognize that a four-hour period is challenging for students. So, I will not exclusively engage in lecture during the periods. Rather, I will use a combination of teaching techniques/resources (e.g., lecture, media, discussion, observational activities). All of the techniques/resources will be focused on the course topics, but will provide some variety in the learning experiences.
