UNDERWORLD

Texas Tech University’s Department of Theatre & Dance presents Underworld April 23 through 27 in the Laboratory Theatre, located at 2812 18th Street between Boston and Flint Avenues on the Texas Tech campus. Curtain times are 8 pm Monday through Saturday and 2 pm on Sunday.

Karen Wurl’s new play Underworld, tells the story of a middle-aged woman who is mourning the loss of her father as she searches for her missing daughter, a recovering drug addict who has succumbed to relapse. Underworld, closing the 2013-2014 Department of Theatre and Dance Laboratory season, will be presented as raw theatre.

When asked about the production, Department of Theatre and Dance Chair, Dr. Mark Charney, said “When the faculty and students chose to produce Underworld, we thought it would be the perfect vehicle to experiment with the idea of raw theatre: plays produced without a budget that actually explore language and authorial intention by playfully exploiting the conventions and boundaries of theatre. We wanted to ask the question why, not how and to encourage improvisation and experimentation.”

Director Cinthya Hernandez said “As any one working in theatre will tell you, one of the most exciting things about working on an original script is the process of discovery and creativity. This past summer, I was very fortunate to have been part of the development of Underworld, working as the production dramaturg. This time around I have the special privilege to take the developmental process a step further by directing a “raw production.”

She continued, “This experiment focuses on the text of the play and the performance aspects, allowing the playwright, the director, the cast, and even the audience to see how the play works before more complex elements are added to the equation. I have been blessed to work with an amazingly talented cast. Although I am the director, I see myself and the actors as a team where collaboration is highly encouraged and the journey of exploration is continually welcomed.”

WARNING: Contains adult language.
