The lectures will be held twice a month at 12:00 noon CT. Invited guest speakers will share their personal stories and experiences. Everyone is invited to attend. Vaccine For a Neglected Tropical Disease, Schistosomiasis

Afzal Siddiqui, Ph.D. is a professor of Immunology and Molecular Microbiology in the School of Medicine and the director of the Center for Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases working to develop a vaccine for schistosomiasis. Schistosomiasis is endemic in 74 developing countries; two hundred million people are infected by it and an additional 800 million people are at risk of acquiring it. The vaccine has the potential of positively impacting one billion people.
Dr. Siddiqui initiated his work at the East Tennessee State University and with the support and mentorship of Executive Vice President, Provost and School of Medicine Dean, Dr. Steven L. Berk, he continued to pursue this research at TTUHSC, first in Amarillo and now in Lubbock. Dr. Siddiqui is one of TTUHSC's most productive researchers. Since coming to TTUHSC, he has received $7.4 million in extramural grant funding, including several NIH awards.
Dr. Siddiqui is the recipient of our Dean’s, President’s and Chancellor’s Council Research Awards and the Grover E. Murray Professorship, the highest honor TTUHSC bestows on members of its faculty. He recently completed the prestigious Fulbright Research and Teaching Award for Southeast Asia. In addition, Dr. Siddiqui recently received a $2.84 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to further vaccine development. This is the first Gates Foundation award given to any researcher in the TTUS system.
