Western Civilization Lecture Series: Dr. Hans Mark

Dr. Hans Mark, John J. McKetta Centennial Energy Chair in Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, former Deputy Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, former Secretary of the Air Force, and former Chancellor of The University of Texas System, will give a public lecture entitled "Exploring the Earth and Cosmos: A Study of Western Civilization."

Western history has been one of restless expansion, a pushing out of boundaries both intellectual and geographical. Western exploration has encompassed both heaven and earth, improvements in celestial observation facilitating global navigation and discovery. From the Portuguese voyages into the South Atlantic during the fifteenth century, to trips to the Moon in the twentieth, Western science and Western exploration have gone hand-in-hand.

Adventure empowered by science, what greater story can there be? Dr. Mark will make the case for a vigorous exploration of deep space, showing how scientific research has been an integral part of the Western experience since the time of Prince Henry the Navigator.

Lecture is free and open to the public.
