The U. S. railway survey publications by the U. S. Government remains the most comprehensive and detailed publication on the historic 1850s exploration and survey of the proposed U. S. transcontinental railroad. Recently, Ms. Freedonia Paschall, the Head of the Technical Processing Department of the SWC/SCL has announced that the multi-volume “Reports of exploration and surveys” of the U.S. transcontinental railway have been digitized and made available. For anyone interested in trails and transportation research these are a treasure trove of information and they contain special maps and illustrations. These are available at the URL listed below and were scanned and posted by Mr. Rob King, SWC/SCL Library Association, and his assistant Mr. Austin Allison.
