Presidential Lecture & Performance Series Announces 2014-2015 Season

  2014-15 Texas Tech University Presidential Lecture & Performance Series presents 

  • An Evening with Cheech Marin  
  • Actor, director, comedian, author, and Chicano art collector
  • Friday, October 3, 2014 – 7:00 p.m.

 Cheech Marin is best known as one half of the hilariously irreverent duo of Cheech and Chong, yet he has developed what is arguably the finest private collection of Chicano art. Marin’s multi-media presentation, Chicano Art: Perspectives of an Art Advocate, launches the TTU Landmark Gallery exhibition of Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection, October 3 – December 14. Exhibit reception October 3, 8:00 - 10:00 p.m., Art Building.  

  • Funkadesi 
  • Indo-Afro-Caribbean world music fusion
  • Friday, November 7, 2014 – 7:00 p.m.

 Funkadesi blends Indian music — bhangra, Bollywood, Indian folk — with reggae, funk, and Afro-Caribbean grooves. The band hails from Chicago, proudly representing the diverse multi-ethnic communities within the city.  They are a 6-Time “Best World Music Band” winner of The Chicago Music Awards. 

  • The Clothesline Muse 
  • A multi-disciplinary theatrical work 
  • Friday, February 20, 2015 – 7:00 p.m.

 This original, multi-disciplinary project explores the clothesline as a metaphor of community lifeline and its ties to the environment. The performance includes dance, music, spoken word, interview text, video and interactive art. The cast includes 6 dancers and six-time Grammy-nominated  jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon as “The Muse.” The Clothesline Muse aims to honor ancestors by transforming the task of washing clothes by hand into beautiful imagery, dance and song. 

  • John Pizzarelli Jazz Quartet with Jane Monheit  
  • In Singers Over Manhattan   
  • Friday, March 6, 2015 – 7:00 p.m.

 Soulful elegance, virtuosic musicianship, melodic creativity, and an unfailing swing will be operative during this meeting of jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli and Grammy nominated singer Jane Monheit, each a world-class communicator of an encyclopedic array of American and other popular song styles. 

  •  Robert Hass, US Poet Laureate (1995-1997)  
  • National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning Poet, Environmentalist and Teacher
  • Friday, April 10, 2015 – 7:00 p.m.

 Robert Hass is, first of all, a poet of great eloquence, clarity, and force, whose work is rooted in the landscapes of his native Northern California. Awarded the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, twice the National Book Critics’ Circle Award (in 1984 and 1997), and the Yale Series of Younger Poets in 1973, Robert Hass is a professor of English at UC Berkeley.

 All lectures and performances will be held in the Allen Theatre on the Texas Tech University campus. General admission tickets are available August 1 through all Select-A-Seat locations (806) 770-2000  or www.selectaseatlubbock.com. Individual tickets $18.00; Season tickets $75.00 for all five season events. TTU Students receive one free ticket with valid TTU ID at the SUB information booth located at the entrance to the TTU Allen Theatre.
