TODAY: Global Health Society presents "What is Public Health?"
GHS will be opening its first public forum lecture series with, "What is Public Health?" featuring Theresa Byrd Ph.D., Chair and Associate Dean of Department of Public Health at TTUHSC, and Samira Kamrudin Ph.D., epidemiologist, biostatician, and faculty member of the Department of Public Health at TTUHSC. This forum will begin with an introduction and lecture from Byrd and Kamrudin, followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Join us as Dr. Byrd discusses her experience working in community health with migrant populations in Central America and Mexico. She has been involved in projects aimed at understanding health-related attitudes as well as interventions to change health behaviors. She has worked on three CDC funded projects researching prostate cancer screening decision for Hispanic and Africa-American men, ethnic variations in attitudes toward hysterectomy, and developing culturally relevant videos for English and Spanish speaking women on shared decision-making for surgery. She is currently Co-director of there Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) funded grants.

Dr. Kamrudin is an assistant professor at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Department of Public Health.  Her academic research focuses on risk factors and etiology of breast cancer and its subtypes among Mexican-American women.  She also has a vast interest and experience in health services research employing epidemiological methods and biostatistical techniques to assess medical and pharmacy claims data for healthcare outcomes research. Dr. Kamrudin received her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Texas HSC in Houston and her MPH in chronic disease epidemiology from Yale School of Public Health. 


We invite you to learn, listen, and ask questions about what is Public Health and how it affects you as students or health care workers in your community through public policy, science, politics, environment, and food safety.

STUDENTS of ALL majors are encouraged to join and contribute. Reception to follow.
