Building Faculty Capacity for Clinical Simulation in a Philippine University

Sharon Decker, RN, PhD, ANEF, FAAN, professor and director of the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center, Covenant Health System Endowed Chair in Simulation and Nursing Education, has been involved in resource capacity building related to the pedagogy of simulation at Sillmann University, Dumaguette City for the past 5 years. The goal of the endeavor is to support faculty development specific to integrating simulation throughout curricula and competency assessments of healthcare providers.
Chris Esperat, RN, PhD, FAAN, associate dean of Clinical Services and Community Engagement, School of Nursing, has been involved in resource capacity building at Silliman University, Dumaguete City for over five years. She was part of the leadership team that established the initiative to revitalize primary health care in Dumaguete City.
This presentation will provide a brief background on the country and university in which this activity occurred and discuss the process of training an interprofessional team of faculty at Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Philippines in the effective use of clinical simulation for student learning. Faculty from the colleges of Nursing, Allied Health, and Medical Technology participated in the training. In addition, there were faculty representatives from schools and universities from other provinces who took part in the training. A component of the training focused on conducting evaluation research to investigate the outcomes of simulation learning.
Objectives: highlight the power of professional collaboration across borders, explore the use of simulation as a tool to promote
interprofessional collaboration, and discuss research opportunities evolving from collaborative endeavors.
This training program was funded by the Office of Institutional Development, Silliman University, and The CH Foundation, Lubbock, Texas.
Free lunch will be provided to the first 50 attendees!
This event is free and open to the public. No RSVP is necessary. Meals will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.
