Chicanitas: From the Cheech Marin Collection at the School of Art

The paintings in this exhibit vary from photo-realism to abstraction, from portraiture to landscapes; such styles and motifs are utilized to express each artists’ personality. “The paintings herein are whole, entire and complete unto themselves.” Marin says, speaking about the artworks in the Chicanitas exhibit. “There is great power in clarity, and the featured artists have distilled the essence of their individual visions into a format that speaks clearly the message that they want to convey … in other words ‘size doesn’t matter’ – it’s what’s inside the frame that counts.”

Cheech Marin is known for his career in film, television, comedy, and most famously for the character, Cheech, of the comedic Cheech and Chong duo. He has emerged as a major collector within the art world with an impressive private collection of Chicano art. Marin has been amassing artworks for over 20 years and made his public debut as an art collector after having broken attendance records at all venues across 15 cities in his previous exhibition, Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge (2001-2007).

The exhibit runs through Sunday, December 13, 2014. Art Building Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Art Building is located at 3072 18th Street (near the corner of 18th St. and Flint Ave.). On Mondays through Fridays, paid parking is available on the fourth floor of the Flint Avenue Parking Facility. Parking is free on weekends. Admission to the School of Art Galleries is free.

The exhibitions, speakers and related programs at Landmark Arts and the Texas Tech University School of Art are made possible, in part, by generous grants from the Helen Jones Foundation and The CH Foundation. Additional support comes from cultural activities fees administered through the College of Visual & Performing Arts.
