Alternative Stigmatics: Painting Saint Catherine of Siena

Thursday, October 30, 2014
Art Building Room B-01 at 6:00 PM

Stigmatization - the reception of the wounds Christ received on the cross - was a controversial miracle. It was also one which, between the beginning of the thirteenth and the end of the sixteenth century, was more often experienced by women than by men. Yet it is a male saint - Francis of Assisi (d.1226) - who remains the best known stigmatic from this period and the one most often celebrated in visual art.

This talk will focus on the debates about female stigmatics and the representation of their stigmata, concentrating on Catherine of Siena (d. 1380) who received her invisible stigmata in 1375.

Exhibitions and visiting speakers programs at the School of Art are supported by generous grants from the Helen Jones Foundation and The CH Foundation, both of Lubbock.  Additional support comes from Cultural Activities Fees administered through the College of Visual & Performing Arts.
