Art historian John Rewald’s 1938 article on French sculptor Aristide Maillol, “Les ateliers de Maillol,” rehearsed a well established 19th-century journalistic genre — the studio visit.
This paper argues that analysis of the article’s word-and-image relation demonstrates the influence of Surrealist publications and photojournalism on Rewald’s modernist art historical methodology.
