Third Annual International Arts and Cultural Symposium

The Third Annual International Arts and Culture Symposium, sponsored by Sowoon Arts and Heritage and the Museum of Texas Tech University, will be held in the Helen DeVitt Jones Auditorium and Sculpture Court of the Museum of Texas Tech University on February 28, from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm, including reception. 

The lectures and performances of the Symposium bring together scholars from South Korea and TTU to foster cultural understanding within the Lubbock community and surrounding area.  The theme of this year’s Symposium is “Coming of Age.”  Coming of Age is a person’s transition from childhood to adulthood. The age and nature of this transition vary among different societies and cultures.

Welcoming statements will be made by Dr. Sukant Misra, Associate Vice Provost for International Programs Office of International Affairs of TTU, the Symposium’s co-sponsors, Ms. Tabitha Schmidt, Interim Executive Director of the Museum of TTU, Ms. Kyungah Nam, President of Sowoon Arts and Heritage, and Mr. Joe Scarborough, President of Center for Global Understanding. 

Dr. James Brink of TTU will introduce the Symposium’s “Coming of Age” theme as well as the scholars.  Rev. Malcolm Neyland, Associate Chaplain of UMC Pastoral Care Department, will discuss Native American/ Hispanic/ South American Coming of Age, Dr. Amma Akrofi, Associate Professor of Language and Literacy in the TTU College of Education, will discuss Ghanaian/African Coming of Age, and Rabbi Hillel Katzir, former Rabbi of the Temple Shalom Synagogue in Auburn, Maine, will discuss Jewish Coming of Age. 

Dr. Jae Hee Park, famous Korean philosopher, and Ms. Eun A Kim, Korean Tea Master, will lead an authentic Korean Coming of Age Ceremony with ten Texas Tech students.
