Russian art education scholar to speak at the Museum of Texas Tech University
The Museum and Heritage Students Association of the Museum of Texas Tech University will present Dr. Elena Vladimirovna Ivanova on Thursday, February 26 at 12pm in the Helen DeVitt Jones Auditorium. Dr. Ivanova's presentation, "Museum Education on Two Continents," will address her experiences of being a museum and art educator in the former Soviet Union, in today's Russia, and in the United States.  Admission is free.

Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia when it was still called Leningrad, Dr. Ivanova started her career at The Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, which has the largest collection of Russian art in the world.  Since moving to the United States over two decades ago, she has worked at a number of art museums, including the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor; the Contemporary Art Center in Cinicinnati, Ohio; the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and most recently, the Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas.

Dr. Ivanova also taught art history and art appreciation at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.  Her scholarly interests encompass the theory of museum education in both social history and art history. Her specific area of study is the learning process in the museum setting, which was the subject of her Ph.D. dissertation. History was at the core of her Master of Liberal Studies thesis, "Rural Landscape and the Concept of Womanhood in the Mid-Nineteenth Century American Women's Magazines."  Dr. Ivanova explored the symbolism in American landscape paintings in light of the changing role of middle-class women in society.

Dr. Ivanova is an independent scholar and devotes most of her time to research and writing.  She is currently working on a biography of Russian-American artist Leon Schulmann Gaspard, whose paintings are in the collections of the Museum of TTU, as well as other institutions and private holdings world-wide.  She also regularly contributes exhibition reviews and art-related articles to Issue, the monthly Arts Magazine of The Art Studio in Beaumont, Texas.
