As a part of GLBTQ Awareness Month, The GLBTQ Awareness Committee is available to present one of the following programs to your class during the month of October:
“Four Corners: A GLBTQ Values Exploration”
This is an interactive, engaging exercise that encourages students to explore their values related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Please contact Dr. Erin Snyder at erin.snyder@ttu.edu at the Student Counseling Center with questions or to schedule the program in your classroom.
“PFLAG Panel Discussion”
PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons and their families and friends through support, education, and advocacy to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Members of PFLAG Lubbock will be happy to speak to your class about issues relevant to GLBTQ students and their family and friends. “Affirming Theological Perspective on GLBT Issues”
With support from PFLAG Lubbock, Daniel Echols, Associate Pastor at St. John’s United Methodist Church, is available to speak to classes about why he believes Christianity affirms equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people. By taking a detailed look into scripture and the beliefs of the Christian faith, Pastor Echols opens his presentation to Q&A and with it a dialogue about affirming GLBTQ issues in faith. GLBTQ History (Awareness) Month is a month-long annual international and national observance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. October was chosen because of the recognized National Coming Out Day already established as a widely known event on October 11. In addition, October commemorated the first march on Washington by GLBTQ people in 1979.

The GLBTQ Awareness Committee is a coalition of individuals from the Lubbock community and Texas Tech University groups. For the past 10 years there have been various events presented. In the last year the momentum of the planning committee has strengthened. This year the committee continues the focus of coordinated events that are intended to encourage honesty and openness about being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer.
