PALO DURO MOUNTAIN BIKING TRIP

While hard to believe at times, the high plains of west Texas are home to more than cotton farms and cattle pastures. Palo Duro Canyon is home to some of the best mountain biking in the state. Wondering if mountain biking is for you? Make a one day commitment full of thrilling rides through canyon country to find out! Along with gaining experience with the activity you’ll learn about the local area and meet fellow enthusiasts with whom you can plan your next trip.

Location:
Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Canyon, TX

Activity: 
Cross Country Mountain Biking

Learning Goals: 
Proper Mountain bike fit, gear shifting, rider awareness, riding techniques, PD trail system, a little canyon history, and some aspects of Leave No Trace environmental ethics.

Prior Experience:
No experience required.

Physical/Mental Challenge: 
Moderate to strenuous. Mountain biking requires your full attention and willingness to work hard. Uphills can be very strenuous and downhills can be really fast. Mountain biking is much different than riding on the street and requires learning new skills to keep you on two wheels. New riders should expect to be challenged yet have fun, but also be prepared to fall of the bike a time or two.

What Will You Need?

All regular items from the OPC day trip pack list plus:

  • Mountain bike suitable for trail use* (limited number of mountain bikes available for rental)
  • Helmet (limited number of helmets available for rental)

  • Water Bottles

  • *Personal bikes will be inspected by trip leaders to determine suitability
