Changes to Lync: Skype for Business is Coming Soon!

Microsoft has announced that "Lync” will become “Skype for Business” at approximately noon today, Tuesday, April 14. The latest addition to the Office family, Skype for Business, combines the familiar experience of Skype with an expanded Lync feature set, including:

  • Access to the Full Skype Network: Contact anyone on the Skype network via voice, video, or IM, all for free!
  • Emoticons: Full access to the entire Skype library of emoticons.
  • Enhanced Communication Options: Expansive set of communication features

What you need to know:

  • Microsoft is rebranding Lync 2013 to Skype for Business.
  • Skype for Business will be installed automatically through the Windows Update Tuesday, April 14th, at approximately 12 pm CST.
  • When you log into a new session of Lync after installing this update, you’ll notice the new Skype for Business interface.
  • After a few minutes, you’ll see a prompt to restart your Skype for Business client.
  • Once your Skype for Business client has restarted, the familiar Lync interface will reappear. Note that Skype for Business is still running on your computer, but TTU is allowing the campus community to continue using the “look and feel” of Lync.

What should I expect once the update is installed?

  • You do not need to create a new Skype account or log into an existing skype account; simply log into Skype for Business using your eRaider credentials-- just as you did with Lync 2013.
  • Enjoy the increase in functionality and feature set while using the same familiar Lync user interface.
  • Connect to anyone on the Skype Network inside and outside of TTU.
