Landmark Arts at the Texas Tech University School of Art presents Skin of Years: Nudism and the Aging Body an exhibition by Assistant Professor of Art in Painting Ghislaine Fremaux at the TTU Satellite Gallery as part of the June 2017 First Friday Art Trail. The exhibit will be on view from 6 - 9 PM, Friday, June 2, 2017 and by appointment through Sunday June 18, 2017. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
The Skin of Years: Nudism and the Aging Body exhibition stems from an interdisciplinary project conducted by Ghislaine Fremaux, Assistant Professor of Art in Painting, and Dr. Jean Pearson-Scott, gerontologist and Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Texas Tech University. The drawings in this exhibition reflect a week that Professors Fremaux and Dr. Pearson-Scott spent at a nudist community in Texas, where they interviewed senior members of the community about a number of subjects including health, body image, death, and more.
Each immense drawing, executed by Fremaux, portrays one participant in chalk pastel on paper, coated with epoxy resin. The amplified color and scale depicting and highlighting the aging body – so often invisible in American culture – is made fervently visible. The exhibition depicts not only the human body, but also places various notions about the body to the forefront, confronting viewers with the large-scale nudes that promote reframing and rethinking how we approach the idea of aging, our bodies in society, and our own mortality.
Ghislaine Fremaux is an Assistant Professor of Art in Painting at Texas Tech University. She earned her MFA at Pennsylvania State University in 2012. Her undergraduate studies began in 2003 at Bard College at Simon’s Rock and culminated in a BFA from Tufts University with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2007. She has shown and exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the 2014 Nicaraguan Biennial, 2014 Biennial of the Central American Isthmus, A.I.R. Gallery's 10th Biennial. She is currently based at Studio B of the Charles Adams Studio Project Work Studios in Lubbock, TX. Her work centers on intimacy, skin, and the self.
The TTU Satellite Gallery at Charles Adams Studio Project (CASP) is located at 1108 5th Street (5th street and Avenue J) in downtown Lubbock. Gallery hours are Friday, June 2, 2017 from 6 - 9 PM and by appointment through June 18, 2017.
