Mentor Information Sessions

You are personal invited to serve as a mentor in The Lauro Cavazos & Ophelia Powell-Malone Mentoring Program (Mentor Tech) for the 2018-2019 academic year. Since 2002, Mentor Tech has assisted more than 3,300 students in their academic, social and cultural adjustment at the Texas Tech and Lubbock communities. The program matches the student with caring faculty, staff members, and graduate students from Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Our objective is to ensure that each student participant knows that he or she has someone to whom they can count on for encouragement, direction, and support, as they endeavor to navigate the university settings. More than 1,300, participating students have earned degrees from TTU and TTUHSC over the last twelve years. The program was recently featured in The Education Trust's report: "Rising Tide II: Do Black Students Benefit as Grad Rates Increase?"

To serve as a mentor you need not have specific expertise or be of any particular ethnicity, as we currently have mentors of various educational, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We simply ask that you have the willingness to help our students succeed. Additional information regarding the program is available on our website: www.mentortech.ttu.edu.

If possible, please make plans to join us for a Mentor Recruitment Session. During the session, you will receive further details about the program, tips on becoming an effective mentor, as wells as have an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you might have.

If you are interested in learning more, you may also indicate your plan to attend one of the Mentor Information Sessions listed below. Please RSVP by replying to mentor@ttu.edu or calling 806-742-8692.

Remember, the recruitment and retention of students is everyone's responsibility and is crucial to helping the University achieve its enrollment and retention goals. We look forward to working with you in this effort.
