Summer II Course – Women in Modern America

HIST/WS 3323 Women and the Making of Modern America

MTWRF – 12PM-1:50PM
Dr. Julie Willett

This course will trace the social and cultural history of women from the 1880s to the present with particular focus on women’s work and professions. We will focus on the changing limitations and possibilities facing American women, examining the shifting strategies of consent and resistance with which women confronted various conditions and expectation that have shaped Modern America. In the process, we will study women in the contexts of family, leisure, sexuality, and politics. Finally, we will study historical methods, paying particular attention to oral history and how we can privilege a diverse range of women’s voices to explore a gendered perspective that complicates our understanding of the past.

Note: This course satisfies the Texas Tech University multicultural graduation requirement.
