What's in a name?

The Texas Tech University Women’s Studies Program is now known as Women’s & Gender Studies. The name change is an effort to better align the program with the curriculum that has been taught for several years.

“Our curricula and programming offerings examine a range of factors impacting the identity of women and men within the intersection of race, class, gender and sexuality,” said Charlotte Dunham, professor of sociology and director of Women’s & Gender Studies.

Dunham said the program’s advisory board researched practices of other programs and considered feedback from students, faculty and staff before voting to request the name change.

The name change is reflective of a national trend among colleges and universities. Currently, 60 percent of universities have programs that include a focus on gender as well as women. With the name change, the program is one step closer to reaching the goal of offering a major in addition to the minor that has been offered since the program’s establishment in 1981.

“I am very positive about this change, which better reflects the scope of our academic and research expertise,” said Tricia Earl, unit supervisor and undergraduate academic adviser. “The change will bring greater visibility and serve all students, faculty and staff alike.”
