"The Political Economy of Terrorism" - Lecture Featuring Dr. Anne Bradley

On Thursday, September 6, 2018, The Free Market Institute and The Institute for the Study of Western Civilization will host Dr. Anne Rathbone Bradley, the George and Sally Mayer Fellow for Economic Education and Academic Director at The Fund for American Studies. Dr. Bradley will deliver her lecture, entitled “The Political Economy of Terrorism: Economic Freedom as the Counter-Measure,” at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Auditorium of the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University.

Post 9-11, U.S. policy towards terrorism (and in particular, Middle Eastern and Islamic fundamentalist-inspired terrorism) changed forever. The September 11, 2001 attacks made Americans feel vulnerable and exposed after suffering the most violent attack on U.S. soil. With this fear, policymakers rushed to the cause, instigating the War on Terror, a war without end. Almost two decades later, the efficacy of the War on Terror is debatable. The U.S. has suffered no further attacks from al-Qaeda or its descendants, ISIL. Yet, the question remains: is terrorism an effective institutional mechanism for social, economic or political change? How do terrorist groups organize and gain both human and capital investments? Do they have greater success levels as roving bandits or stationary quasi-states? Dr. Anne Bradley’s remarks will examine al-Qaeda as a case study for modern Islamic fundamentalist terrorism from the rational choice, comparative institutional perspective. Seeing the terrorist groups through this lens allows us to capture both the demand and supply sides of al-Qaeda and ISIL, which is required if our policy goals of reducing, or even eliminating, terrorism are possible.

We look forward to sharing this special event with you.
