"Constitution Week" - A Weeklong Lecture Series Event

From September 10-17, The Institute for the Study of Western Civilization at Texas Tech University is sponsoring “Constitution Week,” a weeklong lecture series featuring talks that will explore aspects of the history of constitutionalism both in America and in the Western world.

The week’s keynote lecture will be given at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 13th, by Dr. William B. Allen in the Escondido Theater, located in Room 001 of the Texas Tech Student Union Building. Professor Allen is Emeritus and Dean and Professor at Michigan State University, and also the current Visiting Professor of Conservative Thought and Policy at the University of Colorado. His lecture, entitled “Conscience: the Basis of Liberty, Character and Civilization,” will explore the complex relationship between liberty, caring for citizens, and fostering productivity in America’s civic tradition.

“Constitution Week” will also include important lectures delivered by our very own Texas Tech faculty, featuring the following:

Ryan Hackenbracht

“Holy Disobedience, Compulsory Liberty: Hobbes, Locke, and the Biblical Right to be Bad”

Erin-Marie Legacey
Assistant Professor, Department of History
“The Dead and the Founding of the French Revolution”
Date/Time: Wednesday, September 12th, 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Sydnor Roy
Assistant Professor of Classics, Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures
“Lawgivers of Tyrants: Plutarch’s Lives and the contested status of the ‘Founding Fathers’ in Revolutionary –era America”
