TODAY: Faculty Fellows Talk with Wyatt Phillips
"Early Hollywood's Genres: Circumscribed Choice and the Illusion of Consumer Sovereignty" considers early Hollywood as a group of businesses that found a way to placate the unknown mass audience at the beginning of the twentieth century by projecting the illusion of consumer sovereignty through a limited range of film genres. This practice simultaneously served to subdivide that new, mass audience into definable groups with predictable behaviors, thus appeasing those masses in the present and normalizing them for the future. As such, it was ideally suited to a burgeoning industry looking to both maximize return on investment in the short term and create a situation that promised viability in the long term.

This talk will take place in English 201, starting at 12:30 pm and lasting an hour. Guests are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch; beverages and dessert will be provided.
