Concert: Electric Guitar and Orchestra!

The Electric Guitar in American Culture is only the third-ever conference, anywhere in the world, dedicated to this ubiquitous and influential instrument. As part of EGAC's offerings, the forces of the TTU University Symphony and Symphonic Wind Ensemble will be joined by distinguished electric guitar virtuosos.

The Saturday evening main concert will feature three special guest artists: first, DJ Sparr, Instructor of Composition at TTU School of Music, will perform the Lubbock premiere of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint, originally composed for jazz guitarist Pat Metheny; this will be followed by  DJ Sparr’s Katrina, a concerto for electric guitar and orchestra, with New Orleans jazz guitarist Ted Ludwig as soloist, and the University Symphony Orchestra conducted by Philip Mann.

The second half of the concert will feature surf guitarist extraordinaire Dave Wronski, performing in a trio with Lubbock musicians Jonathan Smither (bass) and Brian Tate (drums). The concert will conclude with a collection of surf-guitar-plus-orchestra renditions of original compositions by Wronski and the combined forces of the ensembles... and with a special surprise finale!

The Saturday concert "Electric Guitars and Orchestra" is free and open to the publi
