For immediate release:

Join us for The Electric Guitar in American Culture conference in Buddy Holly’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas this October 12-13-14th presented by the Vernacular Music center at Texas Tech University’s School of Music, the Buddy Holly Center, Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts, the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Provost’s Creative Process Commons, and the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The Electric Guitar in American Culture (“EGAC”) conference will feature the latest research on the world’s most popular musical instrument: panels, concerts, an Exhibit Hall, and a tour of the Buddy Holly museum.

The conference opens Friday, October 12th with research papers presented by graduate students in several themed panels. On Friday evening the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts will host the EGAC “Lubbock Guitarslingers” concert on their plaza, 7-10pm, featuring the best of Lubbock’s professional electric guitarists. Admission is free. (Food and drink will be available.)

Saturday will continue with faculty research presentations during the day with a keynote address by Dr. Steven Waksman, Sylvia Dlugasch Bauman Professor of American Studies at Smith College and author of Instruments of Desire: The Electric Guitar and the Shaping of Musical Experience. Dr. Waksman is one of the founding scholars of the emerging field of Guitars Studies.

The Saturday evening main concert will feature two premieres and two special guest artists: first, DJ Sparr, Instructor of Composition at TTU School of Music, will perform the Lubbock premiere of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint, originally composed for jazz guitarist Pat Metheny; this will be followed by DJ Sparr’s Katrina, a concerto for electric guitar and orchestra, with New Orleans jazz guitarist Ted Ludwig as soloist, and the University Symphony Orchestra conducted by Philip Mann. The second half of the concert will feature surf guitarist extraordinaire Dave Wronski, performing in a trio with Lubbock musicians Jonathan Smither (bass) and Brian Tate (drums). The concert will conclude with a collection of surf-guitar-plus-orchestra renditions of original compositions by Wronski and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble conducted by Dr. Sarah McKoin.

Sunday morning the conference moves to the Buddy Holly Center for a tour of the museum followed by brunch.

Conference admission for the general public is $35 for the weekend, $10 for students with ID. Please NOTE: the Exhibit Hall and the Friday and Saturday evening concerts are admission free!
