OLLI Presents “The Films of a Master” February 4, 11, and 25 at 2:30 p.m.

The world marked the centennial celebration of the extraordinary life and talent of Leonard Bernstein last year. Join us as we continue our appreciation of Bernstein through three outstanding films which illuminate his prolific genius.

“On the Town” first debuted on the New York stage in 1944 and became an award-winning film in 1949. “On the Town” follows three energetic sailors on a 24-hour shore leave in New York City during World War II. The film stars Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Jules Munshin as well as Vera-Ellen, Betty Garrett and Ann Miller.

“On the Waterfront” stars Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint and won several Academy and Golden Globe awards in 1955. “On the Waterfront” tells the story of boxer turned dockworker. His courage to testify against a corrupt union boss wins the allegiance of others working on the Hoboken waterfront.

“Candide” was adapted from Voltaire’s 1758 novella and debuted as a stage production in 1956. Candide was released in film a in 1991 where satire, irony, and optimism collide for a group of characters who believed that “all is for the best” in the “best of all possible worlds.”
