Seeking Hispanic adults for research on the benefits of heat therapy & omega 3s

Purpose:

This research study aims to better understand the effect of omega 3 supplementation with increasing body temperature on improving vascular health and blood sugar levels in individuals with pre-diabetes. To help decide if you qualify for this study, the researchers will ask you questions about your health, including medications you take and any surgical procedures you have had, we will measure your blood pressure and fasting blood sugar levels. Please review the study requirements below to see if you qualify for this study:

           Overweight male and females: Body mass index greater than 30 to 40

           Normal weight male and females: Body mass index less than 30

           Age 20-65

           Hispanic / Mexican

           No diagnosed history of type 1 or type 2 diabetes

           Not pregnant

           Do not smoke

           Not allergic to fish

 

Study Details:

Length of study: 12 weeks total

Number of visits: 29 visits

Compensation: 200$

 

The study will be conducted at Texas Tech University in the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management Building (Exercise and Thermal Integrative Physiology Laboratory). The main part of the study will require you to take omega 3 supplementations that we will provide you over 12 weeks. Other study procedures involve measuring your body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and perspiration. From week 6 to 12, you will visit the laboratory and rest in a hot water tub, lasting for 90 minutes each visit. At pre- and post-12 weeks you will have the following test done:

 

Pre-post Study Measures:

Mixed meal tolerance test that requires obtaining blood samples;

Vascular function test that measures small and large blood vessels health with a laser doppler and ultrasound;

Gut microbiome profile analysis which requires you to provide a stool sample.
