Join us for Jacqueline Kolosov’s creative writing workshop for students and community participants, which will respond to Phoenix Brown’s mixed media work. Those studying or having an interest in literature, creative writing, and the arts are encouraged to participate. The workshop will engage poetry, fiction, and nonfiction and offer participants the opportunity to experiment using a variety of prompts.

The Making Today Series is supported by the Dean’s Arts in Action Micro-Grant through the J. T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts and sponsored by the School of Art’s Committee for Equity through Engaged Education. This series seeks to create a dynamic space rooted in the school’s commitment to artistic praxis, which will intentionally generate collaboration across TTU’s campus. By learning in and though the Making Today Series, the TTU arts community will organically and dynamically cultivate a space to challenge traditional ways of knowing, to render different histories tangible, and to meet and exchange multiple and contested stories.
Phoenix Brown is an artist shaped by Black Feminism, personal narrative, and current events. She disrupts the picture plane with fragmentation, bold lines, and gestures that take on a life of their own. In 2018, she was a resident artist at Yale Norfolk School of Art and is currently the Abert Family Curatorial Fellow at the Milwaukee Art Museum. She will be an artist-in-residence at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati in the summer of 2021.
Jacqueline Kolosov is a professor in the TTU Department of English and her publications include 3 full-length poetry collections, among them Memory of Blue and Modigliani's Muse, a multi-voiced biography-in-poems with a grounding in ekphrasis. In 2008, the NEA awarded her a Literature Fellowship in Prose. Her lyric essay collection, “Motherhood, and the Places Between,” won the Mary Roberts Rinehart Award (2015). In 2018, she directed The CH Foundation's Arts for Healing Workshops & Programming and has ongoing work in Art in Community Health and Narrative Medicine.
