Summer I Class: EDLL 5353 Studies in Gender, Adolescence, and Literacies
EDLL 5353 Studies in Gender, Adolescence, and Literacies is offered online during the first summer session. The purpose of this course is to give participants the opportunity to identify and discuss current literacy research concerned with the ways gender identity shapes adolescent’s multifaceted online/offline and in-school/out-of-school literacy practices. As part of this focus, participants will investigate a variety of perspectives surrounding gender and literacy such as the “pornification” of new media (Ringrose, 2009), adolescents’ narratives about human trafficking (Lloyd, 2011), girls’ gaming practices (Hayes, 2013), adolescent boys’ literacy identities (Bean & Ransaw, 2013), trauma and gender identity (Dutro, 2019), and adolescents’ disengagement with school.
