Speaker Series- What is Charisma?

We all know what ‘charisma’ is—at least we think we do. But how much of it really has to do with subjectivity—the “pretty/handsome” or “smart” factors? Enter John Antonakis, recipient of the Thought Leaders in Management Award in the Rawls College of Business, whose provocative research suggests that charisma can be assessed objectively. With electrical engineering colleagues he has created the “charismometer”—which he will demonstrate in his upcoming Zoom presentation on Friday, February 17th at 9:00a CST.

More specifically, Professor Antonakis will provide an overview of studying charisma scientifically, and address the question why it should be re-defined from a signaling perspective. He will show why questionnaire measures should never be used to gauge charisma as an independent variable, and why charisma should be experimentally manipulated in the context of consequential experiments or measured via verbal or non-verbal signals. He also will provide evidence showing that charisma can help individuals deliver a vision that sticks, motivate workers, or help coordinate player actions in public good settings. Finally he will show that charisma is a difficult to emulate skill that depends strongly on cognitive ability--hence it is a costly signal.
