Alexander Lin, Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School Speaking at TTUHSC

Please join us for a talk titled “The Virtual Biopsy: Clinical Applications of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy” to be presented by Dr. Alexander Lin, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lin will speak at 1 p.m. Monday (July 28) in room 1C125B at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Lin is a principal investigator at the Center for Clinical Spectroscopy and Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has been involved in magnetic resonance spectroscopy since 1997 both from a research and clinical perspective. Prior to joining Brigham, he was director of clinical services with Dr. Brian Ross in Pasadena, California where he developed a clinical MRS program and from that experience has trained hundreds of physicians and technologists over the past 10 years. He has published more than 36 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and has presented his research internationally. His current research with MR spectroscopy in mild traumatic brain injury was recently highlighted in media reports on CBS and CNN, and in the New York Times.

Abstract:

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) provides a non-invasive “virtual biopsy” by measuring the concentration of chemicals in the body as biomarkers of metabolic and physiological processes. Widely available across all clinical MRI scanners, this quantitative and objective measure enables early diagnosis and treatment monitoring across a broad range of diseases including traumatic brain injury, cancer, neurological and psychiatric disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, pediatrics as well as emerging methods outside of the brain to measure liver function and muscle energetics. This presentation will provide an overview of the methods, metabolites, and their clinical applications.
