Silenced Voices: Tales of Sri Lankan Journalists in Exile

  • Date: Thursday, November 13, 2014
  • Time: 12:00 noon CT
  • Location: ACB 240

Silenced Voices: Tales of Sri Lankan Journalists in Exile is a film about freedom of speech and messengers of truth. It demonstrates how much individuals are willing to risk to bring information to light. The film focuses on personal encounters with exiled journalists from Sri Lanka who have been “silenced” and targeted for assassination because they exposed corruption, massacres of civilians, and other war crimes committed by the state. As the treatment of the press demonstrates, Sri Lanka is ranked as one of the worst countries in Asia with respect to freedom of the press. Over the past few years, many outspoken journalists have been tortured or killed. Others have simply disappeared . At least 50 have fled the country. Silenced Voices is their story.

While this film raises awareness of the difficulties faced by press in Sri Lanka, attendees should be aware that the film includes several scenes of intense violence.

This event is free and open to the public. No RSVP is necessary.

Free snacks will be provided!
