IT Alert: Beware of Phone-Based Phishing Scams
US-CERT and other Security Alert Monitoring Services are reporting an increase in fake phone calls from "IT Support." This threat is exploited via telephone contact. Someone claiming to work for a well-known software or technology company's IT Support contacts you indicating that your computer is infected, at risk of infection, or is exhibiting suspicious behavior. The criminal posing as a company representative claims that they can correct the problem by installing software or tools on your system.

If you receive an unexpected call of this nature, please hang up. You may also wish to contact the company the caller claims to have been representing, and report the fraud.

A similar scam exists, in which a pop-up on a user’s computer informs them that their system has been compromised and directs them to call a number for assistance. After calling the number, the individual is instructed to install malware on their system, typically under the guise of “support tools.” If you receive a pop-up of this nature, please contact IT Help Central immediately for further assistance ((806) 742-4357 (HELP) or ithelpcentral@ttu.edu).

As always, the IT Division reminds customers to be vigilant and aware of attempts by malicious individuals to steal your identity or infect your computer with malware. For questions or further assistance, please contact IT Help Central at ithelpcentral@ttu.edu or (806) 742-4357 (HELP).
