MPA Course Spring 2015, Planning & Management of Weather and Climate Risks

PUAD 5348-003, CRN 44523 - Strategies for Success in the Public Sector: Planning and Management of Weather and Climate Risks.

Many of the hazards faced by human and natural systems are the result of weather and climate-related risks. A drought can limit water supply, impact agricultural production, and threaten aquatic ecosystems; a severe storm can flood a coastal city with sea water and an inland city with refugees; a wildfire can burn down houses, power lines, and forests. Drawing on materials and guest lectures from experts with a wide range of experience in research, planning, and public administration, this class will introduce students to the challenges that short-term weather events and long-term climate trends pose in planning for the future. Interactive class sessions will focus on developing and applying data and information on climate and weather to plan for future changes. In group projects, students will be challenged to develop a weather and climate risk management plan for a given city, region, or state.

This class will meet once a week on Mondays from 6 to 8:50 pm in Holden Hall, room 111.

Prerequisites: Students should be familiar with and capable of basic data analysis using any spreadsheet or analysis package such as Excel, Stata, SPSS, MatLab, or R. Previous enrolment in PUAD 5348 "The Science and Policy of Climate Change" (offered Fall semesters) is required for this course. Students who do not have the required prerequisite but are interested in taking the course will will be permitted to do so, conditional on passing a qualifying exam based on relevant study materials prior to the beginning of spring semester.
