HDFS 5353: Advanced Teaching Topics in the Social Sciences (CRN 39022)
This graduate course provides an overview of some active teaching techniques (e.g., service-learning, experiential-media activities, biographical applications). This is an advanced course, so it will not focus on basic teaching issues (e.g., syllabus construction, lecture development). However, the course does not have prerequisites (e.g., basic teaching courses, teaching experience). The course will focus on techniques that can supplement or partly replace traditional “stand and talk” lectures. The techniques and course readings are not limited to family studies topics. Rather, the course materials are drawn from various fields (e.g., psychology, sociology, social work, education, criminal justice, hospitality). So, the course would likely be helpful to graduate students in various social science departments. This course is scheduled for Thursdays (6:00-8:50pm) for the Spring 2011 semester. Please contact Dr. Jacki Fitzpatrick at Jacki.Fitzpatrick@ttu.edu for more information. Thank you for your attention.
