2014 Annual International Arts and Culture Symposium

2014 Annual International Arts and Culture Symposium

The Second Annual International Arts and Culture Symposium, sponsored by Sowoon Arts and Heritage and the Museum of Texas Tech University, will be held in the Helen DeVitt Jones Auditorium and Sculpture Court of the Museum on March 27, 2014, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.  The Symposium is free of charge and open to the public.

The lecture and performing arts portions of the Symposium bring together scholars from South Korea and Texas Tech University to foster cultural understanding within the Lubbock community and surrounding area.  Music and dance are important elements of intangible cultural heritage and the theme for this year’s Symposium is traditional music and dance.  Intangible cultural heritage refers to traditional knowledge and practice, and even individual practitioners.  UNESCO encourages governments to recognize such practitioners as a means to value and cherish intangible cultural heritage.

Symposium participants will be welcomed with comments given by Ambassador Park, Consul General of the Republic of Korea, Maestro David Cho of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Internationally recognized scholar Dr. William Westney, Horn Professor at the Texas Tech University School of Music will introduce the symposium.

The program will begin with a discussion of Irish traditional music and dance by Dr. Christopher Smith, Associate Professor and Chair of Musicology/Ethnomusicology at the TTU School of Music.  Following will be two world-renowned performers from South Korea, Dr. Jaehwa Lee and Dr. Sung Ok Yang.  Dr. Jaehwa Lee is a Living Human Treasure of South Korea and the holder of Important Intangible Property No. 16.   Dr. Lee is also a world famous geomungo player, and she will perform two pieces: Geomungo Sanjo and Geomuingo Sinawee.  Dr. Sung Ok Yang is the bearer of Important Intangible Property No. 92.  She will perform three traditional Korean dances: Taepyeongmu - Dance of Peace, Sanjo Dance, and Binaree - the Wish Dance.
