The Texas Tech University Teaching Academy announces the 2019 Annual John M. Burns Conference on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, which will take place on Monday, October 14, 2019 in TLPDC 151. Named in honor of Dr. John M. Burns, former Provost of Texas Tech University who founded the Teaching Academy, the conference will bring together faculty, students, staff, and administrators to celebrate the importance of teaching at Texas Tech University.
The keynote speaker for the conference will be Dr. Bryan Dewsbury, Gardner Institute Fellow & Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Dewsbury is the principal investigator for the Science Education And Society Research (SEAS) Program. Their research focuses on questions relating to identity constructs, bias, relationships, and the effects of those variables on learning in students at all levels of education. Specifically, Dr. Dewsbury is interested in helping to re-frame the education discussion to better address questions of equity and community-building, and his work addresses pressing issues such as student retention in STEM fields, the under-representation of minority groups in certain STEM fields, and the role of affect in promoting student learning gains. Additionally, he uses the results of those efforts to help faculty develop inclusive curricula and sense of community in the classroom. You may find more information about him at:

There will be morning and afternoon sessions and lunch will be provided. There will also be a poster presentation by the recipients of the 2018 Teaching Academy Lawrence Schovanec Teaching Development Scholarships.
