This course will explore the how the sociological imagination manifests in the works of science fiction and fantasy. We will look at the social construction of speculative fiction and account for how the structure and culture of a society contributes to the creation of these forms of popular culture. This class will apply major sociological theories and concepts to the genres of science fiction and fantasy in literature and visual media.
