Landmark Arts Galleries of the TTU School of Art

Blooming Connections; Ai and the Fabric of Community by Patricia Jarrett

The exhibition “Blooming Connections: AI and the Fabric of Community” will be a dynamic and collaborative event that merges art, technology, and community engagement. This project is a partnership between The School of Art (Art Education), The School of Theater and Dance, Roscoe Wilson Elementary and Cavasos Middle School in Lubbock. Patricia Jarrett will work closely with art teachers and students at these schools to create personalized digital representations of flowers using AI, encouraging the students to express themselves through the prompts. These AI-generated flowers will then be printed and displayed in the exhibition.

The immersive experience will be enriched by contributions from Texas Tech’s Theater and Dance student Cameron Martin,, who will assist in creating a garden soundscape and experimental cello performance by Vaughan Hennen, a current Ph.D candidate with the School of Music. During this event, the community will be invited to help construct the digital garden by adding their own printed or hand-crafted flowers. The public will also have the opportunity to create their flowers at a “creation station” using simple materials like coffee filters, paper, and crayons.

In addition to the opportunity to participate during the exhibitions, there will also be workshops throughout February, inviting the community, including families, to engage with Texas Tech’s Art Education program. These workshops will facilitate the creation of different styles of paper flowers crafted by hand that will also be hung throughout the space. Art Education students will assist with the workshops, providing a valuable learning experience while strengthening their connection to the community.

With a special thank you to the Talkington School of Visual and Performing Arts, Patricia was able to secure a Research and Creative Activity Award, a grant available to students that supported all the materials for the exhibition. This event, set to open in March, aims to celebrate creativity and build a lasting relationship between the university and the local community, with an emphasis on interactive, collaborative art.
