This Sunday – 3 Charlie Chaplin films hosted by Dr. Wyatt Phillips

Charlie Chaplin may not have invented funny movies, but he sure seemed to figure out quickly what would send audiences around the world into fits of laughter. Dr. Wyatt Phillips, assistant professor of Film and Media Studies in the English department, will be hosting a screening of three of Chaplin’s early short films – all made during his short but brilliant stint at Essanay Film Co.

If you are unfamiliar with Chaplin’s brilliance, this is the perfect opportunity to see why he is still considered one of – if not the – funniest film comedians. If you already know Chaplin, then this is one of only a few opportunities you may ever have to see him as originally intended – on a big screen with a roaring crowd. While always laugh-producing, silent comedies are never as funny as they are with a live audience, so join us at the Alamo this Sunday, Sept. 18, at 6pm for this rare treat.

These films were recently restored by Flicker Alley and their Lubbock screening has been coordinated, in part, with Dr. Phillips’s ENGL 5351: Studies in Film and Literature course. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at: https://drafthouse.com/lubbock/show/chaplin-at-essanay
