TTU Balkan Ensemble is Recruiting!

TTU Balkan Ensemble is recruiting for FALL 2018!

Players of strings, winds, reeds, keyboard, and percussion, as well as singers and dancers, are most WELCOME.

We need violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, keyboard, and percussion (we can haz drums for you to play!), as well as singers and dancers (we NEED singers and dancers).

Texas Tech School of Music Balkan Ensemble explores the traditional musics of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and Macedonia, as well as Turkey and other regions nearby.

TTU Balkan Ensemble is directed by Prof. Roger Landes and current instrumentation includes violin, cello, electric bass, accordion, oboe, trumpet, guitar, and bouzouki. Singing and dancing are integral parts of the ensembles' performances.

TTU Balkan Ensemble presents a unique opportunity for School of Music students (and community guest players) to explore the complex rhythms and characteristic non-Western modes in musics that developed from the meeting of East and West.

We perform dance tunes, art music in the usual Balkan meters of 5/8, 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, 13/8, 15/8, 17/8, etc., as well as the more familiar 4/4, 2/2, 3/4, 6/8. Vocal pieces are sung in their original languages: Greek, Turkish, Bulgarian, Arabic, Farsi, etc. Traditional tunes are presented along with recently composed works (and ensemble members often compose parts of our repertoire).

This course satisfies one (1) hour of credit.

First meeting is Monday, August 27th at 7:30PM in the Opera Lab on the 2nd floor of the School of Music, 18th & Boston, Lubbock, TX. Please join us!

Rehearsals Monday 7:30PM. Fall concert Monday, October 8th.
