Sociology of Secrecy (SOC 5332)
Sociology of Secrecy (SOC 5332) is a seminar course being offered in Spring 2023. During the course, we will survey the broad literature on secrecy and deception. Topics will include: research on conspiracy theorists, secrecy in social networks, organizational secrecy (crime, business, media, government), social norms of privacy and openness, and the many ways deception appears in interpersonal interaction.

The class is capped at 20 seats, but graduate students from any department are welcome. The main project for the course will be a research proposal on a topic of your choosing (related in some way to secrecy), so this is a good opportunity to refine a research project you are considering, especially by receiving feedback from peers in other disciplines.
