OLLI Presents Eastern Women Artists in the American West on April 21, 2017

This course will address how American women artists in the twentieth century found unexpected freedom, independence, and new aesthetic styles in the Middle-American West, a region too often overlooked in narratives of modern art that tend to focus on the coastal regions as the primary art centers. We will look specifically at three women—Georgia O’Keeffe, Elaine de Kooning, and Nancy Holt—who were trained in Eastern America, but who spent significant portions of their life in middle America, including West Texas, where they discovered new teaching opportunities, new markets and patronage, and new inspirations based on the vast expanses of the American High Plains.
